On a day that promised classic Test cricket under the scenic Table Mountain, India unleashed a bowling onslaught that left South Africa reeling at their lowest total since 1932. The Indian pace battery, led by Mohammed Siraj, decimated the South African lineup for a mere 55 runs in just over two hours of play, marking this as the lowest total a team has posted against India in Test cricket history.
The Newlands pitch, described as “interesting” by South Africa’s departing captain Dean Elgar, who won the toss and chose to bat, turned into a nightmare for the hosts. Despite making several changes, including handing a debut to Tristan Stubbs and the return of Lungi Ngidi, the South African side crumbled under the relentless Indian attack.
Siraj, who was particularly lethal, claimed an impressive 6 wickets in a single session, a feat only achieved by a handful of bowlers since 2016. His spellbinding performance included the scalps of both openers, Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram, setting the tone for the innings. Elgar, in his final Test, had a forgettable outing as he chopped a delivery onto his stumps, becoming one of Siraj’s victims. Markram, too, fell early, caught brilliantly by Yashasvi Jaiswal off a perfect delivery from Siraj that demanded a play.
Jasprit Bumrah complemented Siraj’s aggression by maintaining pressure from the other end. Bumrah’s precision and seam movement were evident as he dismissed Tristan Stubbs, leaving the South African middle order exposed and vulnerable. The hosts soon found themselves in a dire position, teetering at 15 for 4.
The only South African batter who managed to reach double figures was David Bedingham, who fought valiantly for his 12 runs before succumbing to Siraj’s relentless attack. Siraj’s delivery, which found extra bounce, was enough to take Bedingham’s glove and carry through to the wicketkeeper, marking the beginning of the end for the South African innings.
As the South African innings folded, India’s strategic team selection paid off. Choosing to field four out-and-out quicks, including Siraj, Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mukesh Kumar, alongside the fit-again all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, India showcased a formidable attack. Jadeja’s return added depth to the batting lineup, compensating for the absence of Ashwin and the dropped Shardul Thakur.
In contrast to the jubilant Indian side, South Africa’s farewell for Elgar and the hope for a series win turned into a day of disbelief and disappointment. The rapid collapse has put India in a commanding position, raising questions about the South African strategy and the effectiveness of their preparation against a potent Indian pace attack.
As the match progresses, the focus will shift to how South Africa can respond with the ball and whether India can capitalize on their dominant start. The outcome of this Test is crucial for both teams, with South Africa aiming for a series sweep and India looking to salvage pride and end the series on a high note.
