Anrich Nortje is set to make his international comeback at the 2024 T20 World Cup after a nine-month hiatus, having recently played in the IPL 2024. He is part of South Africa’s 15-player squad, led by Aiden Markram. The squad also includes Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman, both of whom are poised to earn their first T20I caps following standout performances in the SA20 league.
Rickelton, a prolific scorer, was the leading run-scorer in the SA20 and performed impressively in the CSA T20 Challenge. He is expected to open the batting alongside Quinton de Kock, who might be playing his last international tournament. Despite De Kock’s recent form, he has been selected based on his historical performances and will continue to play a vital role in the team’s strategy.
Baartman, known for his expertise in the death overs, impressed in both the SA20 and the IPL, showcasing his skills as a quality death bowler. His inclusion is seen as crucial for managing crucial phases of the game. Alongside Baartman, the pace attack includes Kagiso Rabada, Gerald Coetzee, and Nortje, with Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger as traveling reserves. The squad also features three frontline spinners: Keshav Maharaj, Bjorn Fortuin, and Tabraiz Shamsi.
The middle order looks robust with Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs. Notably, former captain Faf du Plessis and high scorer Rassie van der Dussen have been excluded, with van der Dussen set to participate in a second-string squad against the West Indies before the World Cup.
Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, emphasized that the selections were primarily performance-based. He noted that the composition of the team was carefully discussed with Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of cricket, especially in light of the need to balance the squad’s demographic representation. South Africa begins its World Cup campaign on June 3 against Sri Lanka in New York, aiming to leverage the blend of experience and emerging talent to achieve success on the international stage.
