The African Games recently hosted men’s and women’s T20 cricket tournaments in Accra, Ghana, initially granting these matches T20 International (T20I) status. This designation allowed for the players in South Africa’s university team, who competed in these games, to officially earn T20I caps upon their participation.

During South Africa’s first game against Ghana last Sunday, all eleven players representing the team marked their T20I debut. Among these, George van Heerden stood out by scoring an impressive 107 runs off 57 balls, which was celebrated as an official T20I century contributing to a 134-run victory. Following this, another three players debuted in a T20I match against Kenya on Monday, a game that ended in a 70-run loss for South Africa.

However, SACricket Magazine reports a significant update that the matches involving the South African team at the African Games have subsequently lost their T20I status and have been reclassified as “Other T20s.” This reclassification means that the achievements recorded during these matches will not be recognized under “List A T20” statistics.

Despite this setback for the South African team, matches between other countries at the African Games will retain their T20I status. South Africa’s team, composed of university players, is set to face Uganda in their concluding Group A match on Wednesday.

The squad representing Team SA includes players from various universities across South Africa, showcasing the breadth of young cricketing talent in the country despite the recent changes in the status of their matches at the African Games.
