In an unexpected turn of events during the CSA T20 Challenge match at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, on the night of March 23, 2024, the Lions faced a disheartening start against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. Keith Dudgeon, a bowler for KwaZulu-Natal Inland, delivered a remarkable performance that saw three prominent Proteas batsmen – Rassie van der Dussen, Reeza Hendricks, and Temba Bavuma – returning to the pavilion without scoring a single run. This rare occurrence underscored the unpredictable nature of cricket, where even the most skilled players can find themselves at the mercy of an exceptional bowling spell.

The match began with KwaZulu-Natal Inland winning the toss and opting to field first. Their decision paid off almost immediately, as Dudgeon’s precise bowling in the initial overs decimated the top order of the Lions. Van der Dussen, Hendricks, and Bavuma, all highly experienced and regarded for their batting prowess, were dismissed for ducks, leaving the Lions in a precarious position early in the game. This was followed by the dismissal of Mitchell Van Buuren, also for a duck, to Dudgeon, further compounding the Lions’ woes.

Despite the early setbacks, Wiaan Mulder and Evan Jones showed resilience, with Mulder notching up 36 runs off 38 balls and Jones contributing 29 runs from 19 balls. Their efforts helped the Lions post a total of 90/5 at the end of their 15 overs, setting a target of 91 runs for KwaZulu-Natal Inland.

In response, KwaZulu-Natal Inland chased down the target with relative ease, led by Cameron Delport’s aggressive 39 runs off 28 balls and supported by Kagiso Rapulana’s 19 runs. The team reached 94/2 in 11.4 overs, securing a victory by 8 wickets. The win was a significant boost for KwaZulu-Natal Inland, earning them 5 points in the CSA T20 Challenge series.

This match will be remembered for the stunning performance by Keith Dudgeon, who finished with impressive figures of 4 wickets for just 5 runs in his 3 overs, including the wickets of three top-order batsmen from the Lions for ducks.
