In a move that has sparked widespread attention and debate, 56-year-old former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten, who recently took over as the head coach of Pakistan’s cricket team, has reportedly offered a stark and unvarnished assessment of his new side’s dynamics. According to a widely circulated statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kirsten has highlighted significant issues within the team. This statement even elicited a response from former Pakistani President Arif Alvi.
Alvi responded humorously to a post by journalist Ihtisham Ul Haq, who boasts over a million followers on the platform. Ul Haq quoted Kirsten as saying, “There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation.”
However, it is important to note that there is no published interview or video where Kirsten is directly recorded making this statement. The quotes have instead been reported by journalist Sohail Imran on GEO News, citing sources within the dressing room. Neither Kirsten nor any official representative from the Pakistan team has verified these claims.
The backdrop to this controversy is Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the World Cup. They were eliminated after narrow losses to India and the USA, with the latter match being decided by a super over. In their final game on June 16, Pakistan struggled in a low-scoring chase against Ireland, ultimately securing victory with seven wickets down, thanks to Shaheen Shah Afridi’s crucial performance in the penultimate over.
This rapid decline is particularly striking given Pakistan’s recent success, having reached the final of the last edition of the tournament just 18 months ago. The team’s underwhelming performance has led to calls for significant changes, with particular scrutiny on Babar Azam’s role as captain of the white-ball side. Critics are questioning whether Pakistan’s approach to white-ball cricket needs a comprehensive overhaul to regain their competitive edge on the world stage.
As the dust settles on Pakistan’s World Cup campaign, the future direction of the team remains uncertain. Kirsten’s alleged comments, verified or not, reflect broader concerns about team unity and performance. How Pakistan’s cricketing authorities respond to these challenges will be crucial in shaping the team’s prospects in the coming years.
