In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, Kwena Maphaka, South Africa’s fast-bowling prodigy, secured his second five-wicket haul in the U19 World Cup, propelling his team to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe. This match, part of the Super Six stage, was held in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

Maphaka’s exceptional performance of 5-34 in 10 overs not only marked him as the first bowler to achieve twin five-fors in the U19 World Cup but also catapulted him among the top wicket-takers of the tournament, with a total of 12 wickets. His efforts played a crucial role in skittling out Zimbabwe for a meager 102 runs after they were sent in to bat.

The young bowler’s fiery spell was well complemented by his teammates, notably Tristan Luus, who chipped in with 3-25, and Riley Norton, whose economical bowling yielded 1-7 in five overs. This collective effort left Zimbabwe reeling, all out in just 29.2 overs.

In response, South Africa’s chase was spearheaded by Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who struck a swift, unbeaten 53 off 39 balls, embellished with nine fours and a six. This aggressive batting helped the hosts reach their modest target in a mere 13.3 overs, significantly boosting their net run rate. South Africa now holds the second position in Group 2, with their sights set on the upcoming match against Sri Lanka.

The team, under Coach Malibongwe Maketa, displayed remarkable skill and coordination. Maphaka, only 17, shone particularly bright, with his delivery removing three of Zimbabwe’s top four batsmen within the first five overs, a performance that has undoubtedly enhanced his global reputation.

Zimbabwe’s innings briefly rallied with Ronak Patel (32) and Ryan Kamwemba (24) at the crease, but this resurgence was short-lived as Luus and Maphaka quickly dismantled the remaining batting lineup.

South Africa’s chase was equally impressive, with Pretorius and Steve Stolk forming a formidable opening pair. Stolk’s aggressive 37 off 29 balls, combined with Pretorius’ half-century, set the stage for an easy win, rounded off by David Teeger with an unbeaten 10.

This victory is a testament to South Africa’s growing dominance in the tournament, particularly highlighted by Maphaka’s meteoric rise as a fast-bowling sensation. With such performances, the team looks well poised for further successes in the U19 World Cup.
