Cricket South Africa (CSA) is gearing up for the 2027 ODI World Cup by planning significant investments in the country’s cricket stadiums. With an estimated budget of between R200-million and R400-million, CSA aims to ensure that the facilities are world-class for the prestigious tournament, which South Africa will co-host alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The main venues set for upgrades include the iconic Wanderers in Johannesburg, Centurion Park in Pretoria, Kingsmead in Durban, St George’s Park in Gqeberha, Boland Park in Paarl, and Newlands in Cape Town. Additional matches will be held at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein and Buffalo Park in East London, highlighting the widespread enhancements planned across the country.
CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki discussed the ambitious project in an interview with the Sunday Times, revealing that the organization will review the eight venues over the next two weeks. A key focus will be the installation of LED lighting systems, enhancing both the visibility and the energy efficiency of the stadiums.
Moseki acknowledged that the condition of the venues varies, with some requiring more extensive improvements than others. He emphasized the importance of completing all major upgrades by the end of 2026, allowing ample time for any final adjustments before the tournament commences.
To support this extensive overhaul, Moseki indicated that CSA would seek financial assistance from the government. This move underscores the national significance of the event and the broader benefits expected from enhancing these facilities, not just for the World Cup but as a long-term investment in South African sports infrastructure.
