Heinrich Klaasen has admitted that South Africa’s heartbreaking loss to India in the T20 World Cup final in June left him mentally drained and battling burnout. The Proteas seemed on the verge of a historic victory in Barbados, needing just 30 runs from 30 balls with six wickets in hand, but a dramatic collapse saw them fall seven runs short. Klaasen, who played a pivotal role with a blistering 52 off 27 balls, was devastated by the narrow defeat.

“I was shattered after the World Cup,” Klaasen told Rapport. “To come so close and lose like that was tough to handle, especially after putting in so much effort.”

Despite his mental and physical exhaustion, Klaasen had no time to recover as he headed straight into a Major League Cricket campaign with the Seattle Orcas just five days after the World Cup final. It was his third T20 final of the year—having also played for the Durban Super Giants in the SA20 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, both of which ended in defeat. The accumulation of these disappointments took its toll.

“I felt burnt out after the T20 World Cup,” Klaasen admitted. “Mentally, I was very tired. It’s hard to lose three finals in a year and keep going. I explained my situation to Seattle after the tournament, and they understood.”

Klaasen’s fatigue was evident during his time with Seattle, where he managed just 97 runs in six innings, with an average of 16.16 and a strike rate of 116.86—far from his usual explosive form. However, his commitment to honoring his contract showed his professionalism, even under such challenging circumstances.

After a much-needed rest, Klaasen was rested for South Africa’s recent white-ball series against Afghanistan and Ireland, allowing him to recharge both physically and mentally. He marked his return to South African cricket in style, smashing an unbeaten 71 off 32 balls for the Titans in their T20 Challenge win over Boland on Wednesday.

The return to form suggests that the time off has done wonders for Klaasen, who will be hoping to maintain this momentum heading into the rest of the season. “It was great to be back in form with the Titans, and I feel refreshed now,” Klaasen said, hinting that his recovery could reignite his blistering performances for the national team.
