The fourth edition of the SA20 tournament is set to kick off on 26 December this year, marking a significant shift in South Africa’s cricketing calendar. This adjustment comes in response to the absence of home Test matches for the Proteas during the 2025-26 season.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Pholetsi Moseki confirmed the move in an interview with the Sunday Times, explaining that bringing the SA20 forward was the most logical decision given the scheduling gap.
“We are still negotiating for a series, but there won’t be Test matches, definitely not on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day,” Moseki stated. “We’re looking at some international cricket at home next season, but it will be white-ball matches. Hosting a Test becomes logistically challenging at a late stage like this.”
With no traditional Boxing Day or New Year’s Tests on the horizon, CSA saw an opportunity to capitalise on the prime holiday window by ensuring high-profile domestic action. The SA20, which has gained significant traction since its inception, will now serve as the centrepiece of South African cricket’s festive season.
Moseki also highlighted the benefits of this shift for the national team, particularly with the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled for February 2026.
“There’s also the T20 World Cup in February 2026, so it’s a nice opportunity for the players before that tournament,” he added.
By moving SA20 to the December-January window, CSA aims to maximise player preparation for the global tournament while maintaining fan engagement during what is traditionally a peak cricketing period in South Africa.
