In a dramatic turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), citing escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan as the primary reason. A formal announcement from the BCCI is expected shortly, but the decision is already sending shockwaves through the cricketing world.
The suspension comes just a day after a concerning incident during the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC), which was abandoned midway through the first innings in Dharamsala. With the airspace over Himachal Pradesh restricted and nearby airports closed, the IPL was forced to arrange a special train to evacuate players and support staff to Delhi early Friday morning.
At the time of suspension, IPL 2025 had reached the 58-game mark, including the abandoned match in Dharamsala. Just 12 group-stage games remained, with fixtures scheduled in cities across the country including Lucknow (2 matches), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (3), Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru (2), Mumbai, and Jaipur. The playoffs were scheduled to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata
This decision is unprecedented in the league’s history outside of the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions and underscores the gravity of the current geopolitical climate. The BCCI has yet to provide details on whether the remainder of the tournament will be rescheduled, relocated, or cancelled altogether.
For now, franchises, fans, broadcasters, and sponsors are left in limbo as the cricketing world watches closely for the BCCI’s next move.
