Delano Potgieter delivered a scintillating all-round performance, earning him Player of the Match honors and setting the tone for what could be a dominant season.
Brevis Sets the Foundation
Batting first, MICT posted a challenging 174/7, courtesy of Dewald Brevis’ blistering 57 off 29 balls. Brevis, nicknamed “Baby AB” for his ability to dismantle attacks, showcased his class under pressure. Skipper Rashid Khan lauded his efforts, stating, “The way Brevis batted and then the way we finished, it was special. He’s someone who can change the momentum at any time.”
George Linde (23* off 17) and Potgieter (25* off 12) added vital runs at the back end, ensuring MICT reached a defendable total. Potgieter, reflecting on his contribution, said, “Only came in to bat in the 18th over and tried to do all I could to get us to a higher total.”

While Brevis lit up the first innings, it was Potgieter’s sensational bowling that sealed the victory. Playing his first match as a bowler for MICT, he ripped through SEC’s batting lineup, finishing with jaw-dropping figures of 5/10 in three overs. “I think I just tried to keep it simple—did not bowl one slower ball, just aimed to hit the top of the stumps,” Potgieter remarked, reflecting on his success.
SEC crumbled under the pressure, managing only 77 runs in 15 overs. Trent Boult set the tone with early breakthroughs, dismissing Zak Crawley and Tom Abell within the powerplay. From there, it was all Potgieter, as he ran riot, dismissing key players like Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen.
Rashid Khan was full of praise for Potgieter: “Special bowler, special guy. He hasn’t bowled much in T20s in the last couple of years, but he delivered tonight.”
A Tough Day for Sunrisers
SEC skipper Aiden Markram admitted it was a disappointing outing for his side. “Just not at the races with the bat,” Markram conceded. Despite positives in their powerplay bowling, where Marco Jansen claimed 2/38 and Richard Gleeson impressed with 2/22, SEC’s batting left much to be desired. Markram, the only batter to cross double figures with a steady 19, acknowledged their struggles, stating, “We’ll have to have some good conversations, start afresh.”
