In a crucial World Cup league game on Friday, Rassie van der Dussen’s unbeaten 76 guided South Africa to a comfortable five-wicket win over Afghanistan, subsequently eliminating Afghanistan from the semi-final contention.

South Africa, chasing a target of 245, saw Van der Dussen steer the team to victory with 15 balls remaining, setting a solid foundation for their upcoming semi-final against Australia. Afghanistan, needing a near-impossible 438-run win for a semi-final berth, were bowled out for 244, despite Azmatullah Omarzai’s impressive unbeaten 97.

This result sets New Zealand up to face hosts India in one semi-final, with Pakistan needing a significant victory against England to alter the scenario.

South Africa’s chase was initially slowed by Afghanistan’s spinners, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi dismissing Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock, respectively. Bavuma’s hamstring issues and de Kock’s impending ODI retirement added layers to the match’s narrative. De Kock’s performance, however, was notable as he reclaimed the top spot in the tournament batting chart.

The Proteas regained momentum with a third-wicket partnership of 50, but were briefly troubled when Rashid Khan dismissed both Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. It was Van der Dussen’s partnerships, including a crucial 65-run stand with Andile Phehlukwayo, that anchored South Africa’s chase. Phehlukwayo’s unbeaten 39, culminating in a winning six, was a highlight.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s innings was rescued by Azmatullah’s ODI best score, recovering from a precarious 116-6. South African bowlers, especially Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj, delivered strong performances, with Maharaj’s 2-25 being particularly economical.

Quinton de Kock also made his mark as a wicketkeeper, equalling a World Cup record with six dismissals in the game.

Afghanistan’s innings started aggressively but lost momentum due to early strikes from Maharaj and Coetzee. Despite the middle-order collapse, Azmatullah’s resilience brought Afghanistan to a competitive total.

Afghanistan’s campaign in the World Cup, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, ended on a strong note with notable victories, reflecting their growth in international cricket.

The partnership between van der Dussen and Phehlukwayo proved critical in guiding South Africa past a tricky chase, showcasing their readiness for the semi-final clash. Van der Dussen’s controlled batting and Phehlukwayo’s aggressive finish were the highlights of South Africa’s successful chase.

As the World Cup progresses, South Africa looks forward to a seminal match against Australia, reminiscent of their 1999 encounter, with aspirations of reaching the final on November 19.
