As the South African team gears up for their highly-anticipated World Cup semi-final against Australia at Eden Gardens, all eyes are on Proteas captain Temba Bavuma and his race against time to recover from a hamstring injury.

Bavuma, who suffered the injury during the team’s victory over Afghanistan, has been a topic of intense discussion among fans and media. Despite concerns over his batting form, coach Rob Walter remains hopeful about his recovery and contributions.

“Temba’s progress has been positive. We’ve seen improvement each day, which is encouraging,” said Walter. “We’re assessing his condition daily in training and will continue to do so.”

Bavuma’s form in the tournament has been under scrutiny, with the skipper scoring 145 runs in seven innings, averaging 20.71. Critics have been vocal, suggesting Reeza Hendricks as a potential replacement. Hendricks, who scored 85 against England and 12 against Bangladesh, is seen as a capable stand-in.

However, Walter defends Bavuma’s position in the team, citing his overall performance throughout the year. “He has been one of our best batters. While he hasn’t scored as much as he’d like in the World Cup, he’s shown signs of form in training and matches. A big score from him seems imminent,” he explained.

Regarding the possibility of dropping Bavuma, Walter emphasized that no player is above the team. “While Temba hasn’t come into the conversation of being dropped due to form, we maintain that no one is undroppable,” he added.

The decision on Bavuma’s inclusion in the XI for the semi-final is expected to be made ahead of the match day. “Ideally, we’d like to make the call early. We’re giving Temba every chance to prove his fitness to play for his country,” Walter stated.
