In an exciting second T20I at St George’s Park, South Africa triumphed over India with a five-wicket victory, propelled by Reeza Hendricks’ stellar 49 off 27 balls. This win handed South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, as the first match was abandoned due to rain.
The match, affected by weather, saw India setting a solid score of 180-7 in their 20 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh contributing 56 and 68 runs respectively. However, rain interrupted their innings, leading to a revised target of 152 in 15 overs for South Africa. The Proteas captain Aiden Markram acknowledged the rain’s role in favoring his team, as it altered the playing conditions.
South Africa’s chase was marked by aggressive batting from Hendricks, who narrowly missed a half-century, and strategic bowling changes by Markram. Tabraiz Shamsi’s economical spin bowling was a highlight, taking 1-18 in his spell. Gerald Coetzee’s bowling at the end of India’s innings also played a crucial role, taking 3-32 and nearly achieving a hat-trick before rain interrupted.
Hendricks, making a strong case for his role as an opener, was supported by Matthew Breetzke and later by the captain and other teammates. Despite losing some wickets towards the end, Tristan Stubbs and Andile Phehlukwayo ensured South Africa reached the target comfortably.
India, despite a shaky start with both openers dismissed for ducks, rebuilt their innings thanks to Suryakumar’s and Rinku Singh’s batting. Suryakumar’s innovative strokes and Rinku’s powerful hits, including one that broke a glass in the press box, were highlights of their innings.
South Africa’s bowling attack, especially the spinners, performed well under pressure. The Indian side, on the other hand, made a late comeback but couldn’t prevent the Proteas from securing the win. The match concluded with South Africa needing a victory in the final match to clinch the series, while India aimed for a win to share the spoils.
