In a historic triumph, South Africa’s women’s cricket team achieved their first-ever victory against Australia in any format, clinching a six-wicket win in the second T20I in Canberra. This monumental win, which took place on Sunday, levels the multi-format series 1-1 after Australia’s initial win on Saturday.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt led the charge with an unbeaten 58, steering her team past Australia’s modest total of 142 for 6 with six balls to spare. Her efforts were crucial in overcoming a potentially tricky situation after South Africa lost 3 wickets for 22 runs. Tazmin Brits also played a significant role, contributing 41 runs and forming a 75-run partnership with Wolvaardt for the first wicket.

The Proteas’ victory was underpinned by a quality bowling performance that restricted the Australian side, known for their formidable batting, to a below-par score. Masabata Klaas shined with a spell of 2 for 16 in three overs, while the spin duo of Nonkululeko Mlaba and Chloe Tryon effectively controlled the middle overs. This disciplined bowling effort included a crucial phase where South Africa prevented Australia from hitting a boundary for 29 balls.

Australia, despite winning the toss and choosing to bat, struggled to build momentum. Captain Alyssa Healy (29 off 24 balls) and Grace Harris (31* off 18) were the only batters who seemed at ease. Harris’s knock, which included three fours and a six, came in a critical phase, contributing to 18 runs in the final over and giving Australia a total to defend.

Reflecting on the victory, Wolvaardt acknowledged the significance of this win, especially as South Africa gears up for the upcoming T20 World Cup. She highlighted the importance of breaking the losing streak against a team like Australia, which could transform the mindset of her young team.

This win is a significant morale booster for the Proteas Women, who were the runners-up in the last T20 World Cup. The victory, coming against the six-time T20 World Cup champions, suggests that the South African team is a rising force in women’s cricket, capable of challenging the best in the world.
