In a landmark announcement, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise revealed that starting from the IPL 2024 season, it will be rebranded as Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This significant change, the first since the team’s formation in 2008, was unveiled during a special event held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The gathering was star-studded, featuring prominent players like Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) champion Smriti Mandhana, alongside members of both the men’s and women’s teams.
In addition to the rebranding news, the event was also a platform for RCB to honor former Karnataka and India pace bowler R Vinay Kumar by inducting him into their hall of fame. Kumar becomes the third member to receive this honor, joining the ranks of AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle, who were the inaugural inductees.
The change to Royal Challengers Bengaluru aligns with a broader trend of sports teams embracing regional identities more closely in their branding. It underscores RCB’s commitment to its home city and its desire to forge a deeper connection with the local fanbase.
Following the announcement, RCB is set to embark on their IPL 2024 campaign, with the team leaving for Chennai on Tuesday evening. They are scheduled to face the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, in the season opener on March 22. RCB has a packed schedule in the tournament’s first leg, playing five matches, which is the joint-most among all participating teams. After their opening game, the team will return to Bengaluru for a series of matches against Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants before heading to Jaipur for an away game against Rajasthan Royals.
This rebranding marks a new chapter for the franchise, promising to add an exciting dimension to its legacy and deepen its roots in the local culture and community. Fans and players alike are looking forward to embracing this change and rallying behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the seasons to come
