Mumbai Indians’ head coach Mark Boucher revealed that the fans’ reaction to the change in captaincy from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya significantly affected the team’s performance in IPL 2024. MI’s season ended in disappointment with an 18-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, placing them tenth with just four wins from 14 games. Rohit started the game on the bench and entered as an impact player, but the Wankhede crowd’s reaction was evident when Hardik came on to bowl, chanting Rohit’s name.

Rohit entertained the home crowd with a 38-ball 68, and his dismissal was met with a hush followed by applause. However, Hardik was booed as he walked out to bat, a constant theme since his first game after being traded from Gujarat Titans, where he had led the side to a title and a runners-up finish.

“It wasn’t great hearing all the boos,” Boucher said. “I felt sorry for Hardik as well. It’s never nice to go through something like that. There are certain things we need to address, and we will address them. Now is not the right time. Everyone is very disappointed and emotional, so no good decision will get made soon. We need to go back and evaluate exactly what’s going on.”

Boucher acknowledged the team’s underperformance this season and expressed hope for better decision-making ahead of the next season. “[There are] things that we need improvement on, whether on the field or off the field stuff,” Boucher said. “We’ve got some great heads within the management team, and we’ll sit down and find a way to make it better for the players to produce the sort of cricket we know they can, which was under par this season. There were a lot of things happening, a lot of moving parts, which wasn’t great to be a part of at certain times. There are certain things that did affect individuals, which ultimately affected the team. We need to address these issues and make good calls moving forward.”

Hardik finished IPL 2024 with 216 runs in 13 innings at an average of 18.00 and a strike rate of 143.04. With the ball, he took 11 wickets in 12 innings at an economy rate of 10.75. Boucher admitted that off-field issues might have “clouded” Hardik, but believed this season would help him grow as a captain.

“I think Hardik would be disappointed with his performances,” Boucher said. “From a captain’s perspective, he had some good games. There’s a lot going on around him that may have clouded his thoughts. He had a lot of support within our dressing room, but it’s tough as a player. There’s a lot of sympathy for what he’s going through. It’s uncalled for, but it will be a learning curve for Hardik as he grows in leadership. Tough times now will pass, and he will grow in the role. I still think there are fantastic things coming from Hardik as a leader.”

Boucher on Rohit’s Future: ‘He is the Master of His Own Destiny’

Speculations about Friday’s game being Rohit’s last for MI, a franchise he led to five IPL titles, were addressed by Boucher. He stated there was no decision made yet. “There haven’t been many conversations about Rohit’s future,” Boucher said. “I spoke to him recently to review the season. I asked, ‘What’s next for Rohit Sharma?’ and he said, ‘World Cup.’ That’s perfect. That’s all I need to know about Rohit Sharma’s future. He is the master of his own destiny. There’s a big auction next season, who knows what’s going to happen? We’ll take each day as it comes.”

Rohit finished as MI’s highest scorer with 417 runs, including a ton and a half-century, despite slowing down in the second half of the season. The Wankhede crowd’s standing ovation suggested fans feared this might be his final appearance in an MI jersey. Rumors of Rohit’s discontent with MI surfaced after he was reportedly overheard talking to Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, about things not going well at MI.

“For Rohit, it was nearly a season of two halves,” Boucher remarked. “He got off to a wonderful start, struck the ball cleanly in the nets, and even scored a fantastic century against CSK. We believed he was headed in the right direction and could score solid runs for us. Sadly, that’s the nature of T20 cricket.”
