4th Match, Group D, New York, June 03, 2024, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka: 77 all out (19.1 overs)
South Africa’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance against Sri Lanka in their Group D clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, reducing the Sri Lankan side to a mere 77 runs in 19.1 overs. Despite pre-tournament concerns about Anrich Nortje’s form, he proved to be the standout performer with impressive figures of 4 for 7 in his four overs.
The Sri Lankan innings started on a shaky note as Pathum Nissanka fell early, caught by Klaasen off Baartman’s bowling. The struggle continued as wickets fell at regular intervals. Kusal Mendis attempted to anchor the innings but managed only 19 runs off 30 balls before being caught by Stubbs off Nortje’s bowling.
Kamindu Mendis contributed 11 runs but was another victim of Nortje’s fiery spell. The middle order crumbled with Wanindu Hasaranga, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Charith Asalanka scoring a combined 6 runs. Hasaranga, in particular, was dismissed for a duck, stumped by de Kock off Maharaj’s delivery.
Sri Lanka’s lower order failed to stabilize the innings. Angelo Mathews showed some resistance with a run-a-ball 16, including two sixes, but fell to Nortje. Dasun Shanaka and Maheesh Theekshana tried to hold on but could only add 9 and 7 runs respectively.
Kagiso Rabada, despite South Africa’s poor form leading into the tournament, was effective with 2 for 21, showcasing his control and pace. Baartman and Maharaj provided solid support with Baartman taking 1 for 9 and Maharaj 2 for 22.
The Proteas’ performance was particularly impressive considering their winless streak in international cricket this year and only two victories out of 11 in T20 matches. This dominant bowling display sets them up well for the rest of the tournament, silencing critics and boosting team morale.
With Sri Lanka’s innings wrapped up at 77, South Africa will be confident of chasing down the target and securing a much-needed victory in this crucial group stage match.
