West Indies have firmly established their dominance over South Africa in the Twenty20 International (T20I) arena, marked by their comprehensive clean sweep in the recent series. This victory underscores a period where the Caribbean team has outplayed South Africa in 8 of their last 10 encounters since March 2023, including back-to-back 3-0 series victories framing the T20 World Cup.
The latest of these victories unfolded in Trinidad, in a match disrupted by rain but not short on excitement. Despite a delayed start and a mid-game interruption reducing play to 13 overs per side, the West Indies showcased their depth and strategic acumen. South Africa, on the other hand, posted a modest 108 for 4, with no batsman apart from Tristan Stubbs making significant scores. This ongoing issue of failing to produce substantial individual scores has been a recurring concern for the team throughout the series.
West Indies’ spinners, Akeal Hosein and the stand-in captain Roston Chase, were particularly stingy, giving away only 22 runs across five overs. Their tight bowling set the stage for West Indies’ adjusted chase of 116.
The response from the West Indies was robust. Despite losing Alick Athanaze early, partnerships flourished. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran quickly put up 58 runs in just 20 balls, setting a solid foundation.
