In a major blow for South Africa, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the first Test against Bangladesh due to a left tricep muscle strain. Bavuma, a pivotal figure in the South African setup, sustained the injury in the lead-up to the series, forcing him to miss the first Test match, set to begin on 21 October at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Despite the setback, Bavuma will travel with the squad and continue his recovery under the supervision of the Proteas medical team, with the aim of being fit for the second Test in Chattogram.
With Bavuma unavailable, Aiden Markram has been named captain for the opening match. Markram, who has captained South Africa in white-ball cricket before, will now take on the red-ball leadership role as the Proteas aim for a strong start in the two-match series.
As a precaution, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has called up Dewald Brevis, the 21-year-old Northerns Titans batsman, to provide cover. Brevis earns his first Test call-up after an impressive showing for South Africa A in a recent series against Sri Lanka A, where he scored 49 and 74 in a four-day match. Known for his aggressive batting style in limited-overs cricket, Brevis will look to make an impact if given the chance to debut in the longer format.
In addition to Bavuma’s injury, the squad is also without left-arm fast bowler Nandre Burger, who has been ruled out of the tour with a lumbar stress fracture. To bolster the fast-bowling department, CSA has named Lungi Ngidi as Burger’s replacement. Ngidi, a seasoned campaigner, recently featured in South Africa’s ODI series against Ireland, where he took two wickets in each of the first two matches, adding depth and experience to the Proteas’ pace attack.
Ngidi will join a pace unit that includes spearhead Kagiso Rabada, the versatile Dane Paterson, and allrounder Wiaan Mulder. South Africa’s bowling lineup looks formidable despite the absence of Burger, with Rabada leading the charge on the typically subcontinental surfaces.
The Proteas squad will gather for a red-ball training camp at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria from 12 to 14 October before departing for Bangladesh. The camp will provide an opportunity for the squad to sharpen their skills and finalize preparations for what promises to be a challenging tour.
With Bavuma sidelined for the opening encounter, all eyes will be on Markram and the rest of the squad as they take on Bangladesh in Dhaka. The Proteas will be hoping for a strong start to the series, with Bavuma expected to return for the second Test as they seek to secure a series win on foreign soil.
This latest injury is a continuation of Bavuma’s recent struggles with fitness. Earlier in October, he was forced to withdraw from the final ODI against Ireland due to an elbow injury sustained during the second match of that series. His absence in the Test format raises concerns about his long-term fitness, but CSA remains optimistic that the skipper will recover in time for the second Test, starting on 29 October.
As for Brevis, this call-up could be the beginning of a promising Test career for the young batsman. His performances in the domestic and A-team circuits have caught the attention of the selectors, and he will be eager to make the most of his opportunity if called upon.
South Africa will rely on their depth and leadership as they kick off this crucial series. With a mix of experienced campaigners like Rabada and emerging talents like Brevis, the Proteas will look to overcome the absence of their captain and make a statement in Bangladesh.
