Former Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has hailed South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis as the “most talented player” he has ever seen. Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket, Ponting not only praised Kallis for his remarkable all-round abilities but also remarked that the Proteas star is one of the most underrated players in the history of the game.
“I will say Jacques Kallis is the most talented player that I have ever seen because of his all-round game,” Ponting declared. “I’m not just talking about a talented batsman; I am talking about a talented cricketer. Jacques Kallis made 44, 45 Test hundreds, probably 300 wickets, maybe more than that, and he would have an unbelievable catching record as well in Test cricket.”

Kallis’ prowess with both bat and ball made him a standout player, yet Ponting highlighted that Kallis doesn’t always receive the recognition he deserves as one of the sport’s greatest.
“I think he is one of the most underrated players ever to play the game. I mean, I know he is rated, obviously, but not many people talk about him as being one of the all-time greats, and in my eyes, he certainly is,” Ponting added.
Kallis by the Numbers
Kallis’ numbers speak for themselves. Over an 18-year career from 1995 to 2013, he played 166 Test matches, amassing 13,289 runs at an exceptional average of 55.37. His tally includes 45 centuries and 58 half-centuries, with his highest score being 224. Kallis remains South Africa’s leading Test run-scorer and ranks third globally, behind only Ponting (13,378 runs) and Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar (15,921 runs).
In addition to his batting, Kallis was a potent force with the ball. He took 292 wickets at an average of 32.65, including five five-wicket hauls, with his best bowling figures being 6/54. His bowling efforts place him as the seventh-highest wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests, with Dale Steyn leading the way for the Proteas with 439 wickets.
While Kallis’ achievements as both a batsman and bowler are staggering, his fielding added yet another dimension to his value as an all-round cricketer. His contribution to South African cricket, in all three aspects of the game, places him in an elite category that few cricketers in history can match.
Despite this, Ponting’s comments shed light on a broader sentiment in cricketing circles — that while Kallis is admired, he has often been overshadowed by other contemporaries when discussions arise about the greatest cricketers of all time. Yet, Ponting’s endorsement underscores that Kallis’ all-round brilliance and consistency deserve to be remembered as legendary.
In cricket, few players manage to dominate in multiple facets of the game. Kallis’ ability to excel with the bat, ball, and in the field cements his place not only as one of the most talented but also as one of the most complete cricketers the world has ever seen.
