South Africa’s plans for the final stretch of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle have hit a snag with Keshav Maharaj sustaining a groin strain during the warm-up ahead of the first ODI against Pakistan. Originally named in the XI, Maharaj limped off shortly before the toss and was replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo. A scan is scheduled for Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury.
The timing could not be worse. After the ODI series, South Africa faces Pakistan in two crucial Tests, needing just one win to guarantee a spot in the WTC final. Maharaj, South Africa’s premier spinner, has been pivotal in their Test campaigns, notably with his five-wicket haul in Gqeberha earlier this month, which secured a victory against Sri Lanka.
South Africa’s bowling resources are already stretched thin. Anrich Nortje (fractured toe), Gerald Coetzee (groin), Lungi Ngidi (hip), and Nandre Burger (stress fracture) have been sidelined, while Wiaan Mulder is racing against time to recover from a broken finger. Maharaj’s absence would leave South Africa relying on a patchwork spin attack, with Dane Piedt, Senuran Muthusamy, Neil Brand, Shaun von Berg, or even Tabraiz Shamsi as potential replacements.
Maharaj’s role as the team’s go-to spinner, especially in tandem with Aiden Markram’s part-time offspin, has been indispensable. His injury complicates South Africa’s strategy in conditions where spin could play a key role, leaving the team scrambling for alternatives to maintain balance in their bowling attack.
With just two Tests left in the WTC cycle, the stakes are high. While South Africa remains in a strong position to qualify for the final, their path has become considerably more challenging. For now, the entire camp will be hoping the scan results deliver good news, sparing them another critical blow.
