Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter finds himself at a crossroads after South Africa’s latest ICC event setback, but director of national teams Enoch Nkwe has thrown his support behind him.

Walter’s side fell to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy semi-finals on Wednesday, marking another near-miss after their 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final exit. His overall bilateral ODI record sits at a modest 50% across 24 matches. While some Cricket South Africa (CSA) officials reportedly harbor doubts about his future, Nkwe insists Walter remains the man for the job.

“We need to empower him,” Nkwe told Sunday Times. “Top priority is appointing full-time batting and bowling coaches.”

He acknowledged the need for a deeper review of South Africa’s performances in ICC knockouts—citing last year’s T20 World Cup final loss to India—and the inconsistency of key players.

“This starts with the individuals, and we’ll address it with them. But it also extends to management and the system as a whole,” he added.

Nkwe also confirmed Walter would have more consistent access to senior players in ODIs as South Africa builds towards the 2027 World Cup, which they will co-host.

“Our focus over the next 24 to 30 months is on stability and providing clarity to those in contention for 2027,” Nkwe concluded.
