The EP Warriors will not contest Wednesday’s One-Day Cup playoff after Cricket South Africa (CSA) deducted log points from their victory over the KZN Dolphins due to a breach of transformation requirements. This decision has seen the Dolphins take the Warriors’ place in the qualifier against the Northerns Titans.
Points Deduction Alters Playoff Picture
The Warriors, coached by former Proteas spinner Robin Peterson, originally finished third in the standings and were set to face the Titans in Centurion for a place in Sunday’s final against Boland in Paarl. However, they were penalized for failing to field the required number of Black African players in their 16 February fixture against the Dolphins at Kingsmead.
CSA’s transformation policy mandates that each playing XI must include at least six players of colour, with a minimum of three Black African players. The Warriors only fielded two – Andile Mokgakane and Sinethemba Qeshile – in their dominant 116-run victory over the Dolphins.
CSA Enforces the Rules
As a result, CSA stripped the Warriors of their points for that match, awarding them to the Dolphins. This adjustment saw the Dolphins leapfrog the Warriors into second place on the log, while the Warriors dropped to fourth.
Dolphins CEO Heinrich Strydom confirmed the ruling, stating that CSA independently identified the breach.
> “Basically, the game that we played against the Warriors, they did not adhere to the transformation requirements. CSA went through a process and confirmed that the Warriors would lose their points. We didn’t even bring it to their attention—CSA picked it up the next morning and started investigating.”
Strydom admitted the delay in the decision caused confusion:
> “Obviously, we would have loved it to be done earlier because nobody quite knew what was happening. It took almost a month, as the match was played on 16 February.”
Warriors’ Costly Oversight
The points deduction proved pivotal in reshaping the One-Day Cup playoff picture. With the Warriors losing points from their victory over the Dolphins, they finished fourth instead of second, thus missing out on a crucial home playoff match.
As a result, the Dolphins will now host the Titans on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s final against Boland in Paarl.
The Warriors will now watch from the sidelines as the Dolphins and Titans battle for a spot in the final. While their performance on the field was strong, their failure to adhere to CSA’s transformation policies proved costly.
With Western Province finishing at the bottom of the standings and set for relegation, the One-Day Cup will see further changes next season. However, the Warriors’ disappointing exit serves as a stark reminder of the importance of meeting CSA’s selection requirements, regardless of match results.
The playoff between the Dolphins and Titans takes place on Wednesday at Kingsmead, with the winner facing Boland in Paarl on Saturday.
