Cricket South Africa’s director of national teams, Enoch Nkwe, has confirmed that Dewald Brevis remains firmly in the Proteas’ plans, despite being left off the list of contracted players for the 2025–26 season.
The 21-year-old, often touted as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents, was a notable omission from CSA’s latest round of central contracts, which included 18 full national contracts and two hybrid deals. However, Nkwe was quick to assure fans that Brevis’ absence from the list is not a reflection of his standing within the national setup.
“Two years ago Dewald got an international opportunity and then things didn’t quite work out for him,” Nkwe told Rapport, referring to Brevis’ two T20I appearances against Australia in Durban in 2023, where he managed just five and a duck. “There is little doubt that if he keeps playing like he is now, he will step onto the field for the Proteas again.”
Brevis, known for his explosive strokeplay and dubbed “Baby AB” due to comparisons with AB de Villiers, has enjoyed an outstanding domestic season. He played a key role in MI Cape Town’s SA20 title win earlier this year, amassing 291 runs at an average of 48.50 and a blistering strike rate of 184.17. He was equally prolific for the Northerns Titans, scoring 398 runs in the One-Day Cup at 66.33 and backing it up with 547 runs in the 4-Day Series at an average of 49.72.
Nkwe praised the youngster’s maturity and resilience in resetting his career path following a rocky start on the international stage. “He has been very impressive at domestic level and it is good that he has hit the reset button and is performing,” Nkwe added. “There will undoubtedly be more opportunities for him to secure his place in the Proteas team. One focus will be to get him to the level where he can play consistently for the SA team.”
While he may not have cracked the national contract list this time around, Brevis’ form is doing all the right talking — and selectors appear to be listening. His next chance to impress will come in England, where he is set to turn out for the Hampshire Hawks in the T20 Blast starting 29 May.
For now, the message from CSA is clear: Brevis is still very much part of South Africa’s future — he just needs to keep doing what he’s doing.
