Not too long ago, Gujarat Titans (GT) were flying. Mumbai Indians (MI), meanwhile, were still trying to work out how to turn competitive performances into victories. How things have changed. MI now roar into this fixture riding a six-match winning streak, while GT have stumbled slightly, losing two of their last five. With both teams sitting level on 14 points, Tuesday night promises not only the top spot, but potentially a defining statement before the playoffs.
But amid all the form guides, batting fireworks and head-to-head stats, one subplot towers above the rest: the return of Kagiso Rabada.
GT have built their campaign around a superb bowling attack. Prasidh Krishna leads the Purple Cap race, and Mohammed Siraj has been devastating with the new ball. Yet, they’ve missed something. Rabada, absent for a month due to a suspension after testing positive for a recreational drug during the South African T20 league, left a vacuum only a world-class bowler could fill. Though the offence was classified as “out of competition” and not performance-enhancing, regulations required Rabada to serve a provisional ban. Now, having served his time, expressed regret, and been cleared to play, he’s back – and with a point to prove.
GT know that to derail MI’s juggernaut, they need more than just containment. They need fire. Rabada’s return couldn’t have come at a better time. Jasprit Bumrah has powered MI’s stunning surge since his comeback last month, giving their bowling the edge. GT will hope Rabada offers the same spark – not just pace, but menace, leadership and big-match pedigree.
The Titans have been patient with their overseas quota, often fielding only three foreigners. But expect Rabada to walk straight back into the XI, likely in place of Ishant Sharma, who has been leaking runs. A Rabada-Prasidh-Siraj trident is not just potent, it is playoff-worthy.
While MI boast Trent Boult and Bumrah, both of whom have found rhythm and are thriving, GT will quietly fancy that Rabada’s comeback brings balance to the scales. If Rashid Khan can find form alongside the pace battery, MI’s red-hot top order could finally face an acid test.
Rabada himself will command attention. Suspensions can leave players rusty or distracted, but also hungry. He returns now not only to help GT push for the top two, but also to reclaim his standing after a challenging period off the field. His performance could well shape GT’s playoff destiny – and re-establish him as one of the IPL’s premier fast bowlers.
With rain threats, high-scoring conditions, and top-two hopes on the line, this could be the clash of the week. But for GT, everything may hinge on what version of Kagiso Rabada walks out under the lights on Tuesday night.
