Cricket was briefly overshadowed by an ugly on-field confrontation on day two of the second unofficial Test between the South Africa Emerging and Bangladesh Emerging sides at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
In what had been a hard-fought match to that point, tensions spilled over dramatically during the 105th over of Bangladesh’s first innings. South African off-spinner Tshepo Ntuli appeared to lose his temper after being struck for a six by Bangladesh’s No.10, Ripon Mondol. What followed was a regrettable physical altercation rarely seen in the longer format.
The match began on May 27, with Bangladesh Emerging opting to bat first under overcast skies. By the end of the first day, they had reached a respectable 242-7, with a superb 109 from Iftakhar Hossain Ifti and a gritty 91 from Moin Khan forming the backbone of the innings. The lower order added useful resistance on the second morning, with stands of 45 and 67 frustrating the South African bowlers.
It was during this final stretch that tempers frayed.
With Bangladesh 286-8, Ntuli was brought on for a new spell. His first delivery was confidently launched over long-on by Mondol, a rare attacking stroke from a No.10 in the format. The broadcast feed followed the ball’s arc out of the ground, but when cameras returned to the pitch, a troubling scene was unfolding.
Ntuli, visibly agitated, walked up to Mondol and began exchanging words. Moments later, he shoved the batter and grabbed the grill of his helmet. Mondol retaliated by pushing Ntuli away, prompting immediate intervention from the umpire and several South African fielders who separated the two.
The exact cause of Ntuli’s outburst remains unclear. Match officials have yet to confirm whether any verbal provocation occurred from Mondol prior to the incident. What is known is that play resumed shortly after the altercation, with Ntuli eventually having the last word by dismissing Mondol for 43.
Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 371—an excellent recovery from their overnight score. However, the altercation has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a competitive display from both sides.
Cricket South Africa and the Bangladesh Cricket Board are yet to issue formal statements, but disciplinary proceedings are expected, particularly with video footage of the confrontation circulating widely online.
