The Proteas have been dealt a major blow ahead of their three-match T20 International (T20I) series against England, with veteran batter David Miller ruled out due to a right hamstring strain.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Tuesday that Miller sustained the injury during the final week of The Hundred, where he was representing English franchise Northern Superchargers. Despite intensive treatment, the 35-year-old has been unable to recover in time for the series, which kicks off on Wednesday at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
Miller’s absence is a significant setback for the Proteas, especially given his vast experience and ability to finish games under pressure. This marks the third straight T20I series he will miss, having also been unavailable for South Africa’s recent away tours to Zimbabwe and Australia. CSA confirmed that no replacement will be called up, leaving the squad at 14 players.
CSA’s Official Statement
“David sustained the injury during the final week of The Hundred and unfortunately has not recovered sufficiently to take part in the upcoming series against England,” CSA said in a statement. “The selectors have decided not to name a replacement at this time.”
Albie Morkel Joins as Bowling Consultant
In more positive news, CSA announced that former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel will join the T20I support staff as a bowling consultant for the series.
Morkel, who was known for his power hitting and experience in high-pressure situations, is expected to provide valuable insights to the bowlers and help refine their strategy against a strong England batting lineup.
Series Schedule
South Africa will be hoping to build on the momentum of their 2-1 ODI series victory over England last week, but the T20I series presents a new challenge with fresh conditions and formats.
- 1st T20I: Wednesday, 10 September, 19:30 – Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
- 2nd T20I: Friday, 12 September, 19:30 – Old Trafford, Manchester
- 3rd T20I: Sunday, 14 September, 15:30 – Trent Bridge, Nottingham
Proteas T20I Squad
- Aiden Markram (captain)
- Corbin Bosch
- Dewald Brevis
- Donovan Ferreira
- Marco Jansen
- Keshav Maharaj
- Kwena Maphaka
- Senuran Muthusamy
- Lungi Ngidi
- Lhuan-dré Pretorius
- Kagiso Rabada
- Ryan Rickelton
- Tristan Stubbs
- Lizaad Williams
Looking Ahead
Miller’s absence opens the door for younger players like Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs to step into key middle-order roles. Captain Aiden Markram will be tasked with leading a side that now lacks its most experienced T20 finisher, adding extra pressure on the rest of the batting lineup to deliver.
While South Africa’s recent ODI success will provide confidence, the T20I format demands quick adaptability and sharp execution — qualities that Miller has embodied throughout his career. Without him, the Proteas will need to find new ways to close out games against a formidable England side.
