The SA20 auction in Johannesburg delivered fireworks as Dewald Brevis, South Africa’s T20I record-holder, smashed the league’s price ceiling by fetching a staggering R16.5 million (approx. US$945,000) from Pretoria Capitals (PC). The bidding war for the local prodigy marked the headline moment in a dramatic day of team reshuffling and big-money moves ahead of Season Four.

Brevis Mania: Pretoria’s Massive Bet

Brevis went under the hammer with a base price of R500,000 (US$28,500). The battle to secure his signature was fierce from the start, with Joburg Super Kings (JSK) opening the bidding and Paarl Royals (PR) pushing it past R10 million. PR eventually dropped out, leaving JSK and PC to fight it out.

JSK raised the stakes to R16 million, but PC went one step further, landing the 21-year-old for R16.5 million — more than half their available purse of R32.5 million.

This makes Brevis the most expensive player in SA20 history, eclipsing all previous records and solidifying PC’s intent to build their franchise around him.

“Dewald is a generational talent and the perfect face of Pretoria Capitals,” said a team official. “We’ve invested heavily because we believe he’ll deliver both on and off the field.”

Markram’s New Chapter with Durban’s Super Giants

Just twelve minutes before Brevis shattered the record, Aiden Markram, South Africa’s T20I captain and two-time SA20 champion with Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), became only the second player to cross the R10 million threshold.

Markram’s bidding war was between Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) and PC. DSG secured him for R14 million (approx. US$800,000), even after SEC attempted to retain their skipper using a right-to-match card at R12.4 million.

Markram is expected to step into a leadership role at DSG, replacing Keshav Maharaj, who was picked up by SEC for R1.7 million (US$97,000).

Sunrisers Reset After Markram Exit

The reigning double champions, SEC, were forced to recalibrate after losing Markram. They entered the auction with 14 slots to fill but retained Tristan Stubbs, who was confirmed as captain.

Their most expensive purchase was batter Matthew Breetzke at R6.1 million (US$350,000). SEC also snapped up Quinton de Kock for a modest R2.4 million (US$137,000), and bolstered their attack with Anrich Nortje for R5 million (US$285,000). Nortje will combine forces with Marco Jansen to form one of the most fearsome pace duos in the league.

Pretoria Capitals Build a Fortress

Alongside Brevis, PC stacked their bowling attack with local star Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams, England’s Craig Overton, and Pakistan’s Saqib Mahmood.

They also grabbed experienced campaigners like Reece Topley and Prenalen Subrayen, whose bowling action was recently cleared by the ICC. Subrayen’s selection adds off-spin depth to their arsenal.

Durban’s Strategic Squad Building

DSG executed a shrewd strategy, combining high-profile signings with promising youngsters.

  • Gerald Coetzee, a rising fast-bowling star, was snapped up for R7.4 million (US$420,000).
  • Kwena Maphaka, another emerging quick, was signed for just R2.3 million, a steal given his potential.
  • Batters David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi joined alongside international spinners Noor Ahmad and Sunil Narine.
  • Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam provides a left-arm spin option for subcontinental conditions.

Joburg Super Kings Invest in Allround Strength

JSK splashed R9 million (US$513,000) on hometown hero Wiaan Mulder, who has been a consistent performer across formats for South Africa.

They retained Nandre Burger for R6.3 million, banking on his recovery from a back injury to bring pace firepower at the Wanderers.

Late in the auction, JSK rounded out their squad with Imran Tahir, Reece Topley, and the versatile Prenalen Subrayen, adding depth and experience to their lineup.

Paarl Royals’ Difficult Day

PR endured a challenging auction, managing their limited budget carefully. Their top signing was Kyle Verreynne, secured for R2.3 million after a tense battle with PC.

To suit Paarl’s traditionally slow and low surface, they added spinners Gudakesh Motie and Ottneil Baartman, but lacked an express quick after missing out on Maphaka and Ngidi.

Sri Lankan allrounder Vishen Halambage and legspinner Nqabayomzi Peter were late additions to provide further options.

MI Cape Town Stick with Continuity

Defending champions MI Cape Town (MICT) opted for stability, retaining most of their core squad.

  • Rassie van der Dussen was their most expensive buy at R5.2 million.
  • Reeza Hendricks was a bargain at R500,000.
  • They also brought in Tabraiz Shamsi and Karim Janat, adding spin variety without breaking the bank.

MICT’s strategy of continuity stands in contrast to other teams that underwent wholesale changes.

Notable Unsold Players

Several high-profile names went unsold, surprising many observers:

  • South African stars: Andile Phehlukwayo, Junior Dala
  • International names: Jimmy Anderson, Moeen Ali, Mustafizur Rahman, Kusal Perera, Jayden Seales
