The Indian Premier League has long been one of cricket’s great cash machines, and South African players have done very nicely out of it. From AB de Villiers’ golden years at Royal Challengers Bangalore to Heinrich Klaasen’s modern mega-deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Proteas stars have earned fortunes in India.
If you are trying to compare South African IPL earnings across eras, though, there is one important complication.
Readers who saw our 2025 version of this list may notice that some of the rand totals now look very different. That does not necessarily mean those players suddenly earned dramatically more or less IPL money. In large part, it is because the rupee has weakened somewhat against the rand since then. For that reason, this ranking is based primarily on rupee earnings, with rand figures shown only as a rough current-day guide.
That is the cleanest way to do it. Rupees are the fixed historical number. Rand totals can move around depending on when you do the conversion, and some of these players have not appeared in the IPL for years. So if the goal is to work out who actually earned the most, rupees have to come first.
Who is the highest-paid South African in IPL history?
No surprise here: it is AB de Villiers. His long run in the IPL, especially with Royal Challengers Bangalore, made him South Africa’s top IPL earner by a distance.
South Africa’s top 10 IPL earners of all time
1. AB de Villiers — ₹102.52 crore

Current rand equivalent: about R181.6 million
Teams: Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore
AB is still comfortably clear at the top. Between his longevity, star power and premium RCB years, he remains the richest South African in IPL history.
2. Kagiso Rabada — ₹66.05 crore

Current rand equivalent: about R117.0 million
Teams: Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans
Rabada just edges David Miller in rupee terms. That makes him South Africa’s second-highest IPL earner, and the highest-paid Proteas bowler in league history.
3. David Miller — ₹65.47 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R115.9 million
Teams: Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals
Miller’s longevity and his big Kings XI Punjab years keep him right near the top. He is only fractionally behind Rabada.
4. Chris Morris — ₹59.18 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R104.8 million
Teams: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils/Capitals, Rajasthan Royals
Morris was one of the great IPL auction winners. His all-round skillset made him incredibly valuable, and the money reflected it.
5. Heinrich Klaasen — ₹57.00 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R100.9 million
Teams: Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad
Klaasen has surged up this list in a hurry. His SRH contract has turned him into one of the richest South African IPL players ever.
6. Quinton de Kock — ₹50.16 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R88.8 million
Teams: Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders
QDK’s IPL journey has been long and varied, and the total adds up nicely. He sits just ahead of Faf du Plessis.
7. Faf du Plessis — ₹48.70 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R86.2 million
Teams: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals
Faf has been one of the league’s most respected overseas batters for years, and his earnings reflect that.
8. Dale Steyn — ₹47.15 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R83.5 million
Teams: Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore
One of the most feared fast bowlers of his era, Steyn was also one of South Africa’s earliest IPL big earners.
9. Jacques Kallis — ₹34.15 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R60.5 million
Teams: Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders
Kallis’ total is lower than some modern names partly because he played before auction inflation really exploded, but he still comfortably makes the all-time top ten.
10. Anrich Nortje — ₹28.70 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R50.8 million
Teams: Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants
Nortje sneaks into the top ten, helped by that run of strong Delhi Capitals deals.
Just missed out
A few South Africans fell just short of the top ten in rupee terms.
Marco Jansen — ₹26.80 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R47.5 million
JP Duminy — ₹23.37 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R41.4 million
Tristan Stubbs — ₹20.70 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R36.6 million
Albie Morkel — ₹19.63 crore
Current rand equivalent: about R34.8 million
