Temba Bavuma has been declared fit to captain South Africa in their pivotal two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning November 27 in Durban. Bavuma, recovering from a left elbow injury sustained during an ODI against Ireland in October, reclaims the leadership role after missing the recent Test series in Bangladesh.

The Proteas have named a 14-man squad, reflecting a focus on key players and allowing others to gain first-class match time. Returning to the Test fold are all-rounder Marco Jansen and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, both coming off recent conditioning programmes and ready to bolster South Africa’s attack.

World Test Championship Aspirations

With a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at stake, South Africa must win all four upcoming Tests—two against Sri Lanka and two against Pakistan—to secure their place. Three wins could also suffice, depending on other results. Proteas coach Shukri Conrad emphasized the significance of these matches, describing them as “almost like a knockout quarter-final.”

Bavuma’s Comeback

Bavuma’s fitness was confirmed after extensive testing, including an intense 90-minute batting session against quick bowlers. Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in his captain’s readiness, stating, “He’s like a kid in a toy shop, excited to lead again.” Despite not playing red-ball cricket since August, Bavuma’s leadership and experience will be critical for a batting line-up featuring emerging talents, such as three maiden centurions in Bangladesh.

Bowling Arsenal Strengthened

The Proteas have assembled a potent bowling attack, led by Kagiso Rabada. Dane Paterson and the returning Jansen and Coetzee add depth. Notably, Anrich Nortje remains unavailable due to back stress fractures, and Lungi Ngidi is sidelined with a groin injury until January. Spin options include Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy, with Dane Piedt missing out.

Squad Details

South Africa’s batting will feature Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, and Ryan Rickelton, with Bavuma likely slotting into the middle order. Tristan Stubbs, who impressed in recent outings, retains his spot, while Wiaan Mulder offers all-round capabilities.
