The KZN Dolphins clinched the One-Day Cup title in a thrilling final against Boland, winning by four wickets with five balls to spare. Initially overshadowed by controversy, the Dolphins’ pathway to the final opened due to a points deduction imposed on the EP Warriors, which elevated them into playoff contention.
Batting first, Boland struggled early, collapsing to 23-4 within the first 12 overs due to exceptional bowling performances from Prenelan Subrayen (2-35), Keshav Maharaj (2-36), and Andile Simelane. Boland captain Clyde Reeves-Fortuin (54 off 64 balls) and former Dolphins player Grant Roelofsen (41) initiated a recovery, but their efforts were disrupted, leaving Boland precariously placed at 142-7. However, Ayabulela Gqamane (69 off 77 balls) and Imran Manack (50* off 39 balls) engineered a crucial 97-run partnership for the eighth wicket, lifting Boland to a competitive total of 247-8.
In their chase, the Dolphins relied heavily on a composed innings by veteran opener Jon-Jon Smuts (91 off 111 balls), supported by Khaya Zondo’s vital 45 runs, which included a 78-run fourth-wicket partnership. Although Boland’s Siyabonga Mahima (3-25) provided resistance by taking key wickets, Dolphins’ rookie Hanu Viljoen (35* off 48 balls) held his nerve, supported by Eathan Bosch (20), guiding their team to victory in the final over.
The Warriors’ controversial points deduction stemmed from failing to meet Cricket South Africa’s required quota of players of colour, resulting in a fine of R500,000, a decision they have vowed to appeal. This controversy added extra tension and drama to the conclusion of the tournament.
