Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their first victory of the IPL 2025 season with a commanding eight-wicket triumph over the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at the Wankhede Stadium, a venue where Mumbai now boast a formidable 10-2 record against their rivals.

The match was defined by the spectacular IPL debut of 23-year-old fast bowler Ashwani Kumar, who returned the best-ever figures by an Indian debutant, claiming 4 for 24 to dismantle KKR for a paltry total of 116.

Ashwani Kumar’s Dream Day

Before this game, Ashwani had played just four T20 matches, but nerves quickly turned to joy when he claimed the prized wicket of KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first delivery. He continued to impress by dismissing key batsmen Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, showcasing exceptional control over his length and remarkable composure under pressure.

Ashwani, primarily known for his exploits in the death overs during the Sher-E-Punjab T20 Trophy, showed versatility despite bowling mostly in the early and middle overs. His disciplined approach, including variations in pace and length, consistently unsettled KKR’s batters, ensuring he finished with figures that tripled his career wicket tally in just one evening.

Boult Sets the Early Tone

While Ashwani was the star, he benefitted greatly from an impressive start provided by veteran pacer Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. Boult delivered once again by claiming a wicket in the first over, bowling Sunil Narine for the 30th time in his IPL career. Deepak Chahar complemented Boult’s efforts, removing the dangerous Quinton de Kock, caught attempting a lofted drive.

The early wickets forced KKR onto the back foot, leading to aggressive counterattacks that ultimately led to their downfall. Despite short-lived resistance from Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26 off 20) and Ramandeep Singh’s late 22 off 12, Kolkata’s innings lacked any meaningful momentum and collapsed to 116 all out in just the 17th over.

Rickelton Guides Mumbai Home

Chasing a modest target, Mumbai’s innings revolved around South African wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton, whose confident 62 not out off 41 deliveries anchored the chase. Despite a shaky start, where he was beaten multiple times, Rickelton quickly found his rhythm, smashing five sixes in his knock. He found strong support from Will Jacks (16 off 17) and later Suryakumar Yadav, whose brisk 27 off nine deliveries sealed the victory emphatically with more than seven overs to spare.

However, concerns linger over the form of Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma, who fell cheaply once again, managing only 13 runs from 12 balls.

Ultimately, it was a comprehensive victory driven by stellar bowling and composed batting, giving Mumbai Indians the ideal boost early in the IPL season.
