The Mumbai Indians hit a historic milestone on Sunday, notching their 150th IPL victory with a commanding 54-run win over the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium.

South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton led the charge, hammering a quickfire 58 off 32 balls — his second fifty of the season — while Suryakumar Yadav blasted 54 off 28 deliveries to push Mumbai to a daunting 215 for 7. Suryakumar, in the process, became the third-fastest player to reach 4000 IPL runs.

Jasprit Bumrah then produced a masterclass with the ball, grabbing 4 for 22 to become Mumbai’s all-time leading wicket-taker in the IPL, surpassing Lasith Malinga’s long-standing record of 170 wickets. Bumrah now sits at 174 IPL wickets and counting.

Mumbai’s Batting Brilliance

After losing Rohit Sharma early for 12 to a clever slower ball from Mayank Yadav, Rickelton kept the momentum flowing. He showed positive intent against both pace and spin, bringing up his fifty in just 25 balls. He shared a 55-run stand with Will Jacks (29) before both fell trying to accelerate.

Suryakumar picked up from there, launching his trademark inventive shots, including a kneeling hook for six. He reached his half-century with a ramp shot and kept the scoreboard ticking despite wickets falling at the other end.

Late fireworks came from Naman Dhir (25* off 11 balls) and debutant Corbin Bosch (20 off 10), who took Mumbai past 200 with some powerful hitting at the death.

Lucknow’s Chase Falls Apart

Lucknow’s reply started positively, with Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran counter-attacking in the powerplay. Pooran, in particular, smashed Deepak Chahar for three sixes in an over.

But Will Jacks turned the game when he dismissed both Pooran and Rishabh Pant in the same over. Pant’s miserable season continued as he fell for just 4, extending a string of low scores after his record $3.21 million signing.

From there, the collapse was inevitable. Trent Boult, using clever changes of pace, removed Marsh for 34 and Ayush Badoni for 35 to put Mumbai in complete control.

With the required rate surging, Bumrah returned and sealed the game. He dismissed David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan in a single over, wrecking any hopes of a late Lucknow comeback. Bosch and Boult then wrapped up the tail to bowl Lucknow out for 161.

Momentum Builders

The victory — Mumbai’s fifth straight this season — propelled them to second in the standings with 12 points from 10 games. It was also their first-ever league-stage win over Lucknow.

For Lucknow, questions continue to swirl around their misfiring middle order, while Mumbai look increasingly like title contenders once again, firing as a unit with both bat and ball.
