In a dramatic twist in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, veteran Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has taken a fiery stand against legendary South African batter AB de Villiers for his harsh critique of Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. The season has been nothing short of a nightmare for Pandya, who returned to Mumbai Indians with the added pressure of leading the five-time champions. Unfortunately, the team became the first to be knocked out of the playoffs, languishing at the ninth spot on the points table.

Gambhir, known for his blunt and unfiltered opinions, didn’t hold back as he blasted De Villiers for his comments on Pandya. The flamboyant Indian all-rounder has been under fire from fans and former cricketers alike, with Kevin Pietersen and AB de Villiers leading the charge. De Villiers, in a scathing remark, claimed that Pandya’s captaincy wasn’t “always genuine” and appeared ego-driven.

“When they themselves did captaincy, what were their own performances like?” Gambhir fired back on Sportskeeda. “I do not think that whether it is Kevin Pietersen or AB de Villiers, there have ever been performances in their careers from a leadership point of view. Nothing. If you look up their records, I think it’s worse than any other leader.”

Gambhir’s outburst didn’t stop there. He continued to question De Villiers’ credibility as a leader, making a bold statement about the South African’s tenure in the IPL. “I don’t think AB de Villiers has even captained any game in the IPL or ultimately achieved anything apart from his own scores. I do not think he has achieved anything from a team point of view. Hardik Pandya is still an IPL-winning captain. So, you should only compare oranges to oranges, not apples to oranges,” he added.

The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star, De Villiers, attempted to clarify his comments, explaining that his criticism was more about the persona Pandya adopts on the field. “Why I said it’s always not genuine is because I played exactly the same way. I was not the soft-spoken, genuine AB de Villiers that I was at home. The guy you saw on the field was in a way ‘an act’. Sometimes, you have to put up a front and show the opposition that you are a force to reckon with. That’s what Hardik Pandya does,” stated De Villiers.

As the IPL drama unfolds, one thing is clear – the cricketing world loves a good controversy. With Gambhir and De Villiers exchanging heated words, all eyes will be on Hardik Pandya to see how he responds to this public scrutiny and whether he can lead his team out of their current slump.
