Since his breakout IPL season with Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2024, where he amassed 378 runs in 13 innings at an astonishing strike rate of over 190, Tristan Stubbs has continued his meteoric rise across international formats and global T20 leagues. His contributions were instrumental in South Africa’s run to the 2024 T20 World Cup final, and he capped off the year with Test centuries against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Reflecting on his transformation, Stubbs credits a “big mental” switch for his recent success.
“It was a big mental thing. I was doing some stupid—or not smart—things out in the middle, so I figured out how to control my emotions when the pressure is on. Hopefully, I can keep learning and continue doing that in big moments,” Stubbs told reporters after rejoining DC for IPL 2025.
Retained for IPL 2025
Stubbs’ prowess as a finisher saw him retained by DC for a staggering INR 10 crore (USD 1.2 million approx.), a testament to his growing value in the T20 circuit. In the previous season, his already-impressive strike rate surged to 262.50 in the death overs (16-20), making him one of the most feared batters in the tournament. As he gears up for IPL 2025, he remains focused on refining his power-hitting skills.
“I like doing some range hitting just to see the ball go over the ropes more than anything, and just to find my swing,” Stubbs explained. “When transitioning between formats, that’s the first thing I try and do when we shift to the T20 training group—just find the swing again and go from there.”
A Well-Rounded Game
Despite his reputation as a power-hitter, Stubbs is far from a one-dimensional player. His ability to maneuver the ball against spinners adds another dimension to his game—a crucial skill for Indian conditions.
“Yeah, I think it’s a very different game here [in India],” Stubbs noted. “There’s a lot of spin, and you’ve got to be able to play it well. Sometimes, you need a Plan B and C because Plan A might not be working on the day. It’s about having different options and being able to commit to them when necessary.”
Thriving on Batting-Friendly Surfaces
Stubbs is also well aware of how certain IPL venues, such as Delhi and Hyderabad, have been a paradise for batters, where no total seemed safe last season. He embraces the challenge such conditions present.
“Sometimes it can free you up; sometimes, you look at the scoreboard and feel you need a lot more than you actually do,” he said. “It’s about finding a balance—when you think you need 20 an over, you realize you can actually do it with maybe two sixes and a couple of fours. But until you’re out there, it always feels like a long way away.”
The Road Ahead
As Stubbs prepares for another IPL campaign, his blend of mental resilience, adaptability, and raw firepower positions him as a key figure in DC’s plans. With the 2025 season on the horizon, fans can expect more fireworks from one of South Africa’s most promising talents. If his recent trajectory is anything to go by, Tristan Stubbs is only just getting started.
