South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been cleared to continue bowling in international cricket after undergoing an independent assessment of his action, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed.
Subrayen was reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during the opening game of the ODI series against Australia last month. Following the report, he was required to undergo testing to determine whether his action complied with ICC regulations.
The off-spinner’s assessment took place at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on August 26, where biomechanical analysis was conducted. The results revealed that the elbow extension for all of Subrayen’s deliveries was within the 15-degree tolerance level permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.
With his action deemed legal, Subrayen is now free to resume bowling in international cricket without restriction.
“This is a positive outcome for Prenelan and for South African cricket,” said a Cricket South Africa spokesperson. “He can now focus fully on his game and continue contributing to the national team.”
Subrayen’s International Journey
Subrayen has made two international appearances for the Proteas this year — a Test match in Zimbabwe and an ODI in Australia. Across these matches, he has claimed five wickets, showcasing his potential as a reliable spin option for South Africa.
During the recent tour of Australia, South Africa lost the T20I series 1-2, but bounced back strongly to win the ODI series. Subrayen made an impact in the opening ODI by taking a crucial wicket, further strengthening his case for regular selection.
Looking Ahead
With his bowling action cleared, Subrayen will aim to cement his place in the South African setup. As the Proteas continue to build towards future international tournaments, his role as an off-spinner could be vital, especially in subcontinental conditions where spin often plays a decisive role.
